Common Reasons Your Car Engine is Overheating

- Don’t panic. Instead, shut off your air conditioner and open your windows to help cool off your engine.
- If your vehicle continues to over, turn on the heater and blower. Doing this moves the heat away from the engine to the passenger side of the vehicle.
- If you are stopped in traffic and you see the temperature guage is rising, shift you car into Neutral or Park and rev the engine a little bit. Doing this makes the water pump and the fan speed up, drawing more liquid and air out of the radiator. The more air liquid circulation, the faster cooling your engine down will take.
- Keep yourself from riding your brakes. In constant slow moving traffic, cruise slowly rather than accelerating and then braking repeatedly. Brake drag actually increases the load on the engine and it makes it heat up.
- If you think your vehicle is going to boil over any minute, drive over to the left-hand side of the road, pop the bonnet and sit in your car until things cool down. Remember to not open the radiator cap when you are stuck in this position and if your engine has in fact boiled over, don’t add any water until the engine is cool again.
